Global value chains (GVCs) hold significant potential for transformation, environmental protection, and biodiversity conservation to improve the living conditions of communities.
The pressure on natural resources, linked to human activities and exacerbated by climate change, hinders the sustainable development of developing countries such as Senegal and other countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
As a think tank, we are committed to developing and implementing various approaches to help (re)concile socioeconomic development and the preservation of natural resources in sub-Saharan Africa through:
The promotion of practices and rules for the concerted management of natural resources.
- Securing access to land and natural resources for various users
- Reconciling socio-economic development and biodiversity preservation through fair and equitable sharing of the benefits associated with its use among stakeholders
- Adapting ecosystems and rural societies to changes
We believe that climate change adaptation policies can reduce the vulnerability of farming systems by supporting their resilience mechanisms—biodiversity of ecosystems and cultivated systems, sustainable management of natural resources, etc.
It is also necessary to strengthen consultation and conflict management mechanisms. All of this requires both investment and an appropriate legal framework. These policies must also facilitate the prevention and management of crises linked to climate shocks, which requires:
- The production and dissemination of relevant information so that stakeholders can adapt their strategies;
- Market intervention during crises to limit their impacts;
- Post-crisis support for the reconstruction of rural economies.
